Several years before we pick up the thread of the story, an evil plan was hatched to steal the Shard from its resting place on Mount Ofiliad. In the dead of winter, Riverwind is forbidden realm, cut off from the rest of the world. Bridges are blocked, roads are sealed by snow and ice, and all travelers stop coming with their wagons and saddle-bags ablaze with untold treasures... He had no name, and came from no place. Those he met remembered him with clear clarity, but in a few hours, he would fade into their memories, never to return. His name is Megleck, but he has no concept of who he is. He is plauged by memories of his own past, echoes on a dying wind of happier times, seemingly lost in the darkness of his mind...
